The demonstrator presents the first silicon implementation of a MIMO detection-decoding engine fulfilling the 4G date rate requirements. It is comprised of a forward error correction (FEC) module supporting LDPC and Turbo decoding and a MIMO sphere detector (SD) supporting up to 64-QAM and 4x4 MIMO systems. The setup allows to analyze bit error rate performance and power consumption under different conditions, using SD and FEC as stand-alone units or as an integrated detection-decoding chain.

Project Information
Project Acronym:
4G Terminal, NEC-FEC
Project Start:
Fri, 01/01/2010
Project End:
Thu, 06/30/2011
Project Description:
Within this project, efficient implementation of MIMO detectors for 4G terminals has been investigated, covering sophisticated concepts to reduce computational complexity as well as parallelization strategies for throughput enhancement. Beyond algorithmic analysis, architectural concepts have been explored, enabling a high-throughput, low-hardware-complexity and low-power-consumption implementation. The clearly outstanding implementation results, together with enabled flexibility, scalability and parallelizability, demonstrate the capability of the proposed detector to fulfill the 4G stringent requirements as well as its suitability for integration into future fourth generation receivers.
